Why I Love Working in a Pet Store (and All the Chaos That Comes with It)

Working in a pet store is honestly one of the most unexpectedly rewarding things I’ve ever done.

I work at Hollywood Feed, and I thought I was just going to be stocking shelves, helping customers here and there, and talking about dog food all day.

What I didn’t expect was how personal it would feel.

Every single day, I get to meet people who genuinely care about their pets like family. And I get to be part of that—helping them figure out what food might help their dog’s stomach, which chew toy will actually survive their “destroy everything in 5 minutes” pup, or just being that person who understands their dog’s quirks without judgment.

And I love that.

The Funniest Part? The Dogs Tell Me Everything (Without Saying a Word)

You learn fast that dogs have very strong opinions.

Some come in acting like they own the store. Some immediately try to become emotional support supervisors. And some just stand there staring at me like, “Pick the right treat or we have a problem.”

And somehow… I always take it seriously 😂

The Real Moments Stick With Me

The best part of my job isn’t even the products—it’s the people.

Like when a customer comes back and says:

Those moments hit different.

Because it reminds me that what I’m doing actually matters in a small but real way.

And Then There’s Roman…

Of course, I can’t talk about pet store life without mentioning my official test subject—Roman.

Everything I learn at work basically gets tested at home. If a chew toy survives him, it passes the ultimate exam. If it doesn’t… well, we call that “educational research” 😭

He’s the reason I pay attention to durability, ingredients, enrichment, and all the little details that actually make a difference for dogs.

Why I Really Love This Job

At the end of the day, I think I love working in a pet store because it doesn’t feel like just a job.

It feels like:

  • Helping people care better for their pets
  • Learning something new every day
  • And being surrounded by animals and people who love them

It’s messy, funny, unpredictable, and sometimes chaotic—but it’s also really meaningful.

And I wouldn’t trade that for anything.
